To many (most) smaller business owner operators, WHS is still seen as an impost – another piece of government bureaucracy that costs time and money. Unfortunately WHS is often just bolted on to the side of a business in order to seemingly comply with the law. This approach is fool’s gold in that it actually proves to be expensive and counter-productive. Frankly in the case of a work place accident or, illness this approach rarely provides the business owner with protection from penalties associated with non-compliance and in fact, can add to the argument that management was aware of the responsibility to comply, but did not practically act to provide a safe working environment.

•The drawing of the layout of the business allows us to better consider traffic flow and the overall space allocated to undertake the separate functions required to operate the business. It also serves to enable all employees and managers areas of high risk, exits to be used in case of emergency. The finalised map should be displayed in public traffic areas and should include an exit and designated external assembly area for cases of emergency exit (apart for bomb threats where everyone should disperse)



An Employee Induction Process should do more than just welcome a new employee and generally introduce them to their job and surroundings. A formal Employee Induction Process provides both the employer and employee with a clear understanding of the others expectations and obligations and therefore provides both employer and employee with the ability to objectively review and determine performance.

A new employee will generally require some time to settle in to the job however, this period does not allow for any lowering of WHS compliance standards and practices. It is important that all new employees are inducted in a way that will allow them to perform their job in a safe manner.

A practical benefit of formal induction is that it assists a new employee to become more productive in a shorter period of time.
